Meet Limu: An EdTech Startup Rooted in Language, Storytelling, and Inclusive Education

Limu is an EdTech startup founded on 4 February 2020 by Sphumelele Sibeko and Sifiso Danisa, born from a shared passion for African languages, storytelling, and inclusive education. The idea took root when Sifiso struggled to find fun, relatable isiZulu and Afrikaans learning materials for her daughter. Sphumelele saw the opportunity to channel her love for storytelling into creating impactful local content. Together, they launched Limu; a language learning app designed to make indigenous languages more accessible, engaging, and meaningful for children.
Why African Language Learning Needs a Digital Revolution
Today, Limu addresses a significant gap in language education, especially in a digital-first era where blended learning shapes how Generation Alpha learns and plays. Despite this shift, there remains a shortage of engaging, tech-enabled tools for children learning African languages at home and in schools.
Bridging the Gap: Limu’s Tech-Enabled Approach to Indigenous Language Education
Millions of children across South Africa and beyond lack access to modern, culturally relevant content in indigenous languages, particularly during early childhood and primary school years. Limu’s app directly responds to this need, offering children and educators a playful, immersive way to engage with African languages.
The solution aligns with the Department of Basic Education’s priorities by promoting accessibility, early exposure, language proficiency, social cohesion, and the preservation of African heritage — using technology to ensure no child is left behind in language learning.
