How Thooto Is Expanding Access to Vocational Learning

Thooto was founded by John Kitenge, who originally launched Param Solutions. He encountered a consistent challenge while building custom tech solutions: the disconnect between available education and on-the-ground workplace needs.
This sparked a shift. The team decided to move beyond just building software for others and instead focus on a space where their skills could make a broader impact: vocational education. That’s how Thooto emerged: to use technology to support practical, career-focused learning at scale.
Focusing on the future of work
In February 2024, Thooto officially opened its virtual doors, offering accredited online training designed to meet the growing workforce needs in South Africa. Working in partnership with the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) and SETA (Sector Education and Training Authority), Thooto provides certified vocational learning programmes that combine flexibility, relevance, and real-world application.
Driving access to accredited, career-ready training
Thooto’s platform is designed primarily for businesses, offering a flexible, data-driven way to invest in employee development while meeting Skills Development Levy requirements. Their offering includes:
- Accredited learnerships: Structured programmes that blend practical skills training with industry exposure to improve employability.
- Focused skills programmes: Shorter, practical courses that provide targeted training to help learners upskill or pivot their careers.
- Occupational certificates: Full qualifications that prepare learners for specific roles, helping them build deep, job-ready expertise.
Thooto is closing the gap between education and employment through this approach, making it easier for individuals and organisations to access training that leads to real outcomes.
