Founding Story

Grow ECD’s journey began in 2014, driven by the insights of Tracey Chambers, the co-founder and CEO of Taking Care of Business (previously The Clothing Bank, TCB). Tracey uncovered a critical gap in the education sector through her work with unemployed mothers at TCB. These mothers, who were striving to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty through self-employment, were confronted with an obstacle: the lack of access to reliable, affordable, and quality early learning services in their communities.

These women understood the transformative power of education and were willing to invest in their children’s futures. However, they often found themselves spending money on transportation to access marginally better Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres, as there were few quality options nearby. This realisation sparked a vision: what if the ECD sector could play a dual role in poverty eradication—supporting unemployed mothers while simultaneously educating the next generation during their most formative years?

Addressing the Quality Gap in Early Education

South Africa is home to over 40,000 early learning programs, but the quality of education in many existing ECD centres remains alarmingly low. This is often due to a lack of management skills, qualifications, and insufficient resources. The challenge is not a lack of passion—many centre owners have a heart for children but lack the business acumen needed to run a sustainable operation and provide professional early learning services.

Grow ECD addresses this problem head-on. Their approach equips ECD centre owners with the tools they need to deliver high-quality education while managing their centres effectively. By leveraging technology, Grow ECD offers a comprehensive solution that includes training, resources, and ongoing support, empowering women to uplift their communities and create lasting, positive change in the lives of young children.

A Holistic Approach to Early Childhood Development

The team at Grow ECD acknowledges that children deserve equal access to high-quality education, regardless of their background or circumstances. This belief led to the creation of a holistic model that would empower women to run financially viable ECD centres, providing 5-star quality early learning experiences.

Grow ECD offers a comprehensive range of services designed to empower ECD centre owners with the tools and resources necessary to deliver high-quality education while managing sustainable businesses. Their services include:

  1. The Grow ECD App: This free mobile platform is designed to guide ECD owners through the process of effectively managing their centres and provides step-by-step assistance with business operations, compliance, and curriculum implementation.
  2. Online Curriculum Subscription and Teachers’ Guide: A structured and easy-to-follow curriculum that ensures consistency in delivering quality education. This includes daily lesson plans and teaching resources tailored to meet the developmental needs of young children.
  3. Business Accelerator Training and Small Business Programme: These programmes are designed to equip ECD owners with the knowledge and skills necessary to run their centres as thriving small businesses.
  4. ECD Finance Services: Grow ECD offers specialised financial products and services that help owners manage cash flow, access capital, and plan for long-term sustainability.

Together, these services create a holistic support system that enables ECD centre owners to focus on what matters most: delivering quality education to the children in their care.

A Path to Sustainable Change

As Grow ECD continues its journey with Injini, we are excited to see how their model will evolve and impact the broader ECD landscape in South Africa.
